The Allison V1710-39 is a V12 liquid-cooled engine which was used to power the RNZAF's Curtis P40E Kitty Hawk. The V12 design gave large engine capacity but with a small fontal section and, therefore, minimised drag.

The Wright Whirlwind is a good example of the other main variation in piston engines - air-cooled and a radial design - very different from the Allison V12 above. The Whirlwind is a 9-cylinder single-row radial and the two fine examples on display here at Classic Flyers are believed to have come from Ansett's very first Lockheed L10A Electra, the pre-WW2 airliner. |

These tiny but powerful engines are used to power helicopters. This one came from a Hughes 500. |

The Merlin is probably the most famous piston aero-engine in the world. The real classic V12 fighter engine, it powered many British WW2 aircraft and was licence built by Packard in the USA for the Mustang. Ours is just such a Packard built Merlin. |

This 6-cylinder aero-engine (pre-war model) is a unique new addition to our collection and currently operational on a test trailer here at Classic Flyers. We love starting her up in front of a group of people, in the same way that they would have done back in the 40's. What a beautiful noise it makes. |
